Human Rights Day in South Africa is observed every year on March 21.
The holiday commemorates the Sharpeville Massacre, which happened on March 21, 1960.
Approximately 5,000 to 7,000 black South Africans descended on the Sharpeville Police Station on that date after a full day of uprisings against the Pass laws, which subjugated blacks to white rule.
The police fired on the dissidents, killing 69 and injuring another 180.
There are conflicting accounts on how the crowd was behaving at the time of the deadly shooting.
Some say the crowd was unarmed and acting peacefully, while others have said that the people were acting perniciously and throwing stones at the police and that the officers opened fire when the crowd started to move forward toward the fence that surrounded the police station.
March 21 was declared Human Rights Day after the 1994 inauguration of former South African President Nelson Mandela.
The holiday calls attention to the deadly Sharpeville Massacre while celebrating South Africa's constitution and its extension of equal rights to all citizens.
The constitution includes a Bill of Rights and entitles all South Africans to be treated with decorum.
On Human Rights Day in Cape Town, there are many activities going on, including the Cape Town Festival, which offers free concerts and shows.
The festival promotes tolerance and understanding while empowering South Africa's diverse population.
Other events on Human Rights Day include the Human Rights Day Swim, which is a cold water ocean race in the Cape, and the Ubuntu Festival in Maynardville Park.
There are generally many other activities also happening on this holiday, but they can vary from year to year.
