Chesney: Goeie dag almal! My name is Chesney.
Becky: In this lesson, you'll learn how to talk about hobbies in Afrikaans.
Chesney: This conversation takes place in an Afrikaans home.
Becky: The conversation is between Marijke and Loes.
Chesney: The speakers are close; therefore, they’ll be using informal Afrikaans.
Becky: Let’s listen to the conversation!
Lesson conversation
|
Marijke: Ek dink dat ek ‘n nuwe stokperdjie gaan begin. Wil jy saam met my dit doen?
Loes: Goeie idee.
(haha)
Marijke: Goed. Môre gaan ons met ‘n kurses begin.
Becky: Let’s hear the conversation one time slowly.
Marijke: Ek dink dat ek ‘n nuwe stokperdjie gaan begin. Wil jy saam met my dit doen?
Loes: Goeie idee. Ek hou van swem en ek hou van fiets ry.

Marijke: Goed. Môre gaan ons met ‘n kurses begin.
Becky: Now let’s hear it with the English translation.
Marijke: I think that I’m going to start a new hobby. Will you join in?
Loes: Good idea. I find swimming fun, and I find biking fun.
Marijke: I find swimming fun, but I don’t like biking.
Loes: Then we’ll begin with swimming or we’ll do something else.
Marijke: I’d like to bike too, because I know that you find it really fun.
Loes: Why don’t we go dancing, or take a class?
Marijke: We can go to the dance school, because you can choose from so many courses.
Loes:You can choose from so many courses that you won’t know whether you are coming or going!
Marijke: Good. Tomorrow we’ll start a course.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Becky: Okay, is going to dance school a common thing?
Chesney: Well, some bigger towns and definitely the cities will have dance schools. I think that it’s mostly kids that take the classes, but there are classes for adults too.
Becky: How long do these courses usually last?
Chesney: These courses can last from a few weeks up to a few months in length.
Becky: What other types of exercise and sports are popular?
Chesney: I have also seen that many people do some off track running and racing with their off-road bikes. Especially in Cape Town, where there are many routes.
Becky: Is this for sport or for a hobby?
Chesney: Well both. You’ll see many people outside in the mornings and many more in the afternoon that do it as a sport.
Becky: Is cycling popular in South Africa?
Chesney: Cape Town hosts the Cape Argus, the world’s biggest bike race.
Becky: How big is it?
Chesney: More than 35,000 bikers hit the 109 km road around Cape Town.
Becky: Wow, that’s a lot! Are there many foreigners there?
