Alisha: Top 25 Afrikaans Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 5: "Do you speak Afrikaans?" In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Afrikaans learners, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question "Do you speak Afrikaans?" In Afrikaans this is...
Dewan: Praat jy Afrikaans?
Alisha: The first word in the question is...
Dewan: praat
Alisha: meaning "speak" in English.
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) praat
Alisha: Listen again and repeat.
Dewan: praat
{Pause}
Alisha: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is-
Dewan: jy
Alisha: meaning "you"
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) jy
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: jy
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Dewan: praat jy
{Pause}
Alisha: And next is...
Dewan: Afrikaans
Alisha: meaning "Afrikaans"
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) Afrikaans
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: Afrikaans
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Dewan: Praat jy Afrikaans?
{pause}
Alisha: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question "Do you speak Afrikaans?"
Dewan: Ja, 'n bietjie.
Alisha: "Yes, a bit." Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Dewan: (Slow) Ja, 'n bietjie.
{pause}
Alisha: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is...
Dewan: Ja
Alisha: meaning "yes"
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) Ja
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: Ja
{Pause}
Alisha: And next is...
Dewan: ‘n
Alisha: meaning " a."
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) ‘n
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: ‘n
{Pause}
Alisha: Next is...
Dewan: bietjie
Alisha: meaning "little."
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) bietjie
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: bietjie
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the speaker say "Yes, a bit." and then repeat.
Dewan: Ja, 'n bietjie.
{Pause}
Alisha: To use a different phrase, let’s replace "a bit" with "fluently."
Dewan: vlot
Alisha: "fluently"
Dewan: (slow) vlot (regular) vlot
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "fluently."
Dewan: Ja, vlot.
Alisha: It mostly stays the same, we just replace "a bit" with "fluently." Now say, "Yes, fluently."
{pause}
Dewan: Ja, vlot.
Alisha: For more practice, replace "fluently" with "I speak Afrikaans."
Dewan: ek praat Afrikaans
Alisha: "I speak Afrikaans"
Dewan: (slow) ek praat Afrikaans (regular) ek praat Afrikaans
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "I speak Afrikaans."
Dewan: Ja, ek praat Afrikaans.
Alisha: Again, it’s almost the same, just replace "fluently" with "I speak Afrikaans." Now say, "Yes, I speak Afrikaans."
{pause}
Dewan: Ja, ek praat Afrikaans.
Alisha: Now let’s replace "I speak Afrikaans" with "a tiny bit."
Dewan: ‘n klein bietjie
Alisha: "a tiny bit"
Dewan: (slow) ‘n klein bietjie (regular) ‘n klein bietjie
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "a tiny bit."
Dewan: Ja, 'n klein bietjie.
Alisha: Here we simply replaced "I speak Afrikaans" with "a tiny bit." Now say, "Yes, a tiny bit."
{pause}
Dewan: Ja, 'n klein bietjie.
Alisha: To say "no" in a simple way, just say
Dewan: Nee, ek doen nie.
Alisha: This is like saying "No, I don't" in English. Let's hear it slowly.
Dewan: (Slowly) Nee, ek doen nie.
Alisha: And one more time at normal speed.
Dewan: Nee, ek doen nie.
Alisha: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you're visiting South Africa and someone asks you if you speak Afrikaans. You want to answer that you speak a bit. Respond to the question.
Dewan: Praat jy Afrikaans? (five seconds) Ja, 'n bietjie.
Alisha: Now you want to answer that you speak a tiny bit. How would you answer?
Dewan: Praat jy Afrikaans? (five seconds) Ja, 'n klein bietjie.
Alisha: You want to answer that you speak Afrikaans. Answer the speaker's question.
Dewan: Praat jy Afrikaans? (five seconds) Ja, ek praat Afrikaans.
Alisha: Now you want to answer that you speak fluently. How will you respond?
Dewan: Praat jy Afrikaans? (five seconds) Ja, vlot.
Alisha: Now you want to ask someone if they speak Afrikaans. Ask the question.
(5 seconds)
Dewan: Praat jy Afrikaans?
{pause}
Alisha: Now it's time to answer the question with actual information about yourself.
Dewan: Praat jy Afrikaans?
{pause}
Alisha: This is the end of Lesson 5.
