Alisha: Top 25 Afrikaans Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 23: "Whose is this?" in Afrikaans. In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Afrikaans learners, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question, "Whose is this?" In Afrikaans this is...
Dewan: Wie s'n is dit?
Alisha: The first word in the question is...
Dewan: wie s'n
Alisha: meaning "whose" in English.
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) wie s'n
Alisha: Listen again and repeat.
Dewan: wie s'n
{Pause}
Alisha: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is-
Dewan: is
Alisha: meaning "is"
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) is
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: is
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.

Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) dit
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: dit
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Dewan: Wie s'n is dit?
{pause}
Alisha: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question "Whose is this?"
Dewan: Dit is myne.
Alisha: "It's mine." Listen as it’s repeated again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Dewan: (Slow) Dit is myne.
{pause}

Alisha: Listen to the speaker say "It's mine." and then repeat.

Alisha: To expand on the pattern, replace "mine" with "hers."
Dewan: hare
Alisha: "hers"
Dewan: (slow) hare (regular) hare
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "hers."
Dewan: Dit is hare.
Alisha: It mostly stays the same, simply replace "mine" with "hers." Now say, "It's hers."
