Alisha: Top 25 Afrikaans Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 21: "Are you hungry?" in Afrikaans. In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Afrikaans learners, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question, "Are you hungry?" In Afrikaans this is...
Dewan: Is jy honger?
Alisha: The first word in the question is...
Dewan: is
Alisha: meaning "are" in English.
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) is
Alisha: Listen again and repeat.
Dewan: is
{Pause}
Alisha: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is-
Dewan: jy
Alisha: meaning "you"
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) jy
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: jy
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Dewan: is jy
{Pause}
Alisha: And next is...
Dewan: honger
Alisha: meaning "hungry"
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) honger
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: honger
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Dewan: Is jy honger?
{pause}
Alisha: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question "Are you hungry?"
Dewan: Ja, ek is 'n bietjie honger.
Alisha: "Yes, I'm a bit hungry." You’ll hear it one more time, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Dewan: (Slow) Ja, ek is 'n bietjie honger.
{pause}
Alisha: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is...
Dewan: Ja
Alisha: meaning "yes"
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) Ja
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: Ja
{Pause}
Alisha: And next is...
Dewan: ek
Alisha: meaning "I."
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) ek
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: ek
{Pause}
Alisha: Next is...
Dewan: is
Alisha: meaning "are."
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) is
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: is
{Pause}
Alisha: And after that is ...
Dewan: ‘n bietjie
Alisha: which is "a bit."
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) ‘n bietjie
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: ‘n bietjie
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the speaker say "Yes, I'm a bit hungry." and then repeat.
Dewan: Ja, ek is 'n bietjie honger.
{Pause}
Alisha: To make a different phrase, replace "a bit" with "very."
Dewan: baie
Alisha: "very"
Dewan: (slow) baie (regular) baie
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "very."
Dewan: Ja, ek is baie honger.
Alisha: You’ll see that it’s almost the same. Simply replace "a bit" with "very." Now say, "Yes, I'm very hungry."
{pause}
Dewan: Ja, ek is baie honger.
Alisha: To give a different answer, replace "very" with "extremely."
Dewan: verskriklik
Alisha: "extremely"
Dewan: (slow) verskriklik (regular) verskriklik
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "extremely."
Dewan: Ja, ek is verskriklik honger.
Alisha: It’s almost the same, just replace "very" with "extremely." Let’s practice. Say "Yes, I'm extremely hungry."
{pause}
Dewan: Ja, ek is verskriklik honger.
Alisha: For more practice, replace "extremely" with "hungry."
Dewan: honger
Alisha: "hungry"
Dewan: (slow) honger (regular) honger
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "hungry."
Dewan: Ja, ek is honger.
Alisha: Here we just replace "extremely hungry" with "hungry." Now try. Say "Yes, I'm hungry."
{pause}
Dewan: Ja, ek is honger.
Alisha: To say “no” in a simple way, just say
Dewan: Nee, ek is nie.
Alisha: This is like saying “No, I'm not” in English. Let's hear it slowly.
Dewan: (Slowly) Nee, ek is nie.
Alisha: And one more time at normal speed.
Dewan: Nee, ek is nie.
Alisha: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you're visiting South Africa and someone asks you if you're hungry. You want to answer that you’re a bit hungry. What would you say?
Dewan: Is jy honger? (five seconds) Ja, ek is 'n bietjie honger.
Alisha: Now you want to say you’re hungry. Respond to the question.

Dewan: Is jy honger? (five seconds) Ja, ek is verskriklik honger.
Alisha: You want to say that you’re very hungry. How would you answer?
Dewan: Is jy honger? (five seconds) Ja, ek is baie honger.
Alisha: You want to ask someone if they are hungry. Ask the question.
(5 seconds)
Dewan: Is jy honger?
{pause}
Alisha: Now it's time to answer the question for yourself.
Dewan: Is jy honger?
{pause}
