Alisha: Top 25 Afrikaans Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 2: "Where are you from?" In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Afrikaans learners, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question "Where are you from?" In Afrikaans this is...
Dewan: Waar kom jy vandaan?
Alisha: The first word in the question is...
Dewan: waar
Alisha: meaning "where" in English.
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) waar
Alisha: Listen again and repeat.
Dewan: waar
{Pause}
Alisha: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is-
Dewan: kom
Alisha: meaning "come"
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) kom
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: kom
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Dewan: waar kom
{Pause}
Alisha: And next is...
Dewan: jy
Alisha: meaning "you"
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) jy
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: jy
{Pause}
Alisha: And next is...
Dewan: vandaan
Alisha: meaning "from"

{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the entire question and repeat.

Alisha: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question "Where are you from?"
Dewan: Ek is van die V.S.A.
Alisha: "I'm from the U.S.A." You’ll hear it one more time, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Dewan: (Slow) Ek is van die V.S.A.
{pause}
Alisha: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is...
Dewan: Ek
Alisha: meaning "I"
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) Ek
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: Ek
{Pause}
Alisha: And next is...
Dewan: is
Alisha: meaning "am."
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) is
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: is
{Pause}
Alisha: Next is...
Dewan: van

Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) van
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: van
{Pause}
Alisha: And next is...
Dewan: V.S.A.
Alisha: which is the "U.S.A."
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) V.S.A.
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: V.S.A.
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the speaker say "I'm from the U.S.A." and then repeat.
Dewan: Ek is van die V.S.A.
{Pause}
Alisha: Try it again, replacing "U.S.A" with "England."
Dewan: Engeland
Alisha: "England"
Dewan: (slow) Engeland (regular) Engeland
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "England."
Dewan: Ek is van Engeland.
Alisha: As you can hear, it mostly stays the same. Simply replace the country. Say "I'm from England."
{pause}
Dewan: Ek is van Engeland.
Alisha: For more practice with the pattern, replace "England" with "France." In Afrikaans this is
Dewan: Frankryk
Alisha: "France"
Dewan: (slow) Frankryk (regular) Frankryk
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "France."
Dewan: Ek is van Frankryk.
Alisha: It’s almost the same. Replace "England" with "France." Say, "I'm from France."
{pause}
Dewan: Ek is van Frankryk.
Alisha: For more practice, replace "France" with "South Africa."
Dewan: Suid Afrika
Alisha: "South Africa"
Dewan: (slow) Suid Afrika (regular) Suid Afrika
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "South Africa."
Dewan: Ek is van Suid Afrika.
Alisha: As you can hear, it’s still the same phrase. Just replace "France" with "South Africa." Say "I'm from South Africa."
{pause}
Dewan: Ek is van Suid Afrika.
Alisha: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you're visiting South Africa and someone asks you where you're from. You're from the U.S.A. How would you answer?
Dewan: Waar kom jy vandaan? (five seconds) Ek is van die V.S.A.
Alisha: Now imagine you're from South Africa. Respond to the question.
Dewan: Waar kom jy vandaan? (five seconds) Ek is van Suid Afrika.

Dewan: Waar kom jy vandaan? (five seconds) Ek is van Frankryk.
Alisha: Imagine you're from England. Respond to the question.
Dewan: Waar kom jy vandaan? (five seconds) Ek is van Engeland.
Alisha: Now you want to ask that person where they're from. Ask the question.
(5 seconds)
Dewan: Waar kom jy vandaan?
{pause}
Alisha: Now it's time to answer the question with actual information about yourself.
Dewan: Waar kom jy vandaan?
{pause}
Alisha: This is the end of Lesson 2.
