Alisha: Top 25 Afrikaans Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 16: "How are you?" in Afrikaans. In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Afrikaans learners, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question, "How are you?" In Afrikaans this is...
Dewan: Hoe gaan dit?
Alisha: The first word in the question is...
Dewan: hoe
Alisha: meaning "how" in English.
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) hoe
Alisha: Listen again and repeat.
Dewan: hoe
{Pause}
Alisha: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is-
Dewan: gaan
Alisha: meaning "goes"
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) gaan
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: gaan
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Dewan: hoe gaan
{Pause}
Alisha: And next is...
Dewan: dit
Alisha: meaning "it"
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) dit
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: dit
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Dewan: Hoe gaan dit?
{pause}
Alisha: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question "How are you?"
Dewan: Ek is okay.
Alisha: "I'm fine." You’ll hear it one more time, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Dewan: (Slow) Ek is okay.
{pause}
Alisha: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is...
Dewan: Ek
Alisha: meaning "I"
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) Ek
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: Ek
{Pause}
Alisha: And next is...
Dewan: is
Alisha: meaning "is."
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) is
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: is
{Pause}
Alisha: Next is...
Dewan: okay
Alisha: meaning "fine."
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) okay
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: okay
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the speaker say "I'm fine." and then repeat.
Dewan: Ek is okay.
{Pause}
Alisha: To use a different phrase, replace "fine" with "good."
Dewan: goed
Alisha: "good"
Dewan: (slow) goed (regular) goed
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "good."
Dewan: Dit gaan goed.
Alisha: It mostly stays the same, simply replace "fine" with "good." Say, "I'm good."
{pause}
Dewan: Dit gaan goed.
Alisha: To express a different feeling, replace "good" with "not so well."
Dewan: nie so goed nie
Alisha: "not so well"
Dewan: (slow) nie so goed nie (regular) nie so goed nie
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "not so well."
Dewan: Dit gaan nie so goed nie.
Alisha: Again, it’s almost the same, we just replace "good" with "not so well." Now say, "I'm not so well."
{pause}
Dewan: Dit gaan nie so goed nie.
Alisha: For more practice, replace "not so well" with "much better."
Dewan: baie beter
Alisha: "much better"
Dewan: (slow) baie beter (regular) baie beter
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "much better."
Dewan: Ek is baie beter.
Alisha: It’s almost the same, we just replace "not so well" with "much better." Now say "I'm much better."
{pause}
Dewan: Ek is baie beter.
Alisha: To say “I’m not fine” in a simple way, just say
Dewan: Ek is nie okay nie.
Alisha: This is “I’m not fine.” in English. Let's hear it slowly.
Dewan: (Slowly) Ek is nie okay nie.
Alisha: And one more time at normal speed.
Dewan: Ek is nie okay nie.
Alisha: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you're visiting South Africa and someone asks you how you are. You’re fine. How would you answer?
Dewan: Hoe gaan dit? (five seconds) Ek is okay.
Alisha: Now imagine you’re much better. Respond to the question.
Dewan: Hoe gaan dit? (five seconds) Ek is baie beter.
Alisha: Imagine you’re not so well. Answer the speaker's question.
Dewan: Hoe gaan dit? (five seconds) Dit gaan nie so goed nie.
Alisha: Imagine you're good. What do you say?
Dewan: Hoe gaan dit? (five seconds) Dit gaan goed.
Alisha: You want to ask someone how they’re doing. Ask the question.
(5 seconds)
Dewan: Hoe gaan dit?
{pause}
Alisha: Now it's time to answer the question with how you’re actually feeling.
Dewan: Hoe gaan dit?
{pause}
Alisha: This is the end of Lesson 16.
