Alisha: Top 25 Afrikaans Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 1: "What's your name?" In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Afrikaans learners, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question "What's your name?" In Afrikaans this is...
Dewan: Wat is jou naam?
Alisha: The first word in the question is...
Dewan: wat
Alisha: meaning "what" in English.
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) wat
Alisha: Listen again and repeat.
Dewan: wat
{Pause}
Alisha: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is-
Dewan: is
Alisha: meaning "is"
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) is
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: is
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Dewan: wat is
{Pause}
Alisha: And next is...
Dewan: jou
Alisha: meaning "your"
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) jou
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: jou
{Pause}
Alisha: And next is...
Dewan: naam
Alisha: meaning "name"
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) naam
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: naam
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Dewan: Wat is jou naam?
{pause}
Alisha: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question "What's your name?"
Dewan: My naam is Anna.
Alisha: "My name is Anna." Listen again as you hear the phrase slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Dewan: (Slow) My naam is Anna.
{pause}
Alisha: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is...
Dewan: My
Alisha: meaning "my"
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) My
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: My
{Pause}
Alisha: And next is...
Dewan: naam
Alisha: meaning "name."
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) naam
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: naam
{Pause}
Alisha: Next is...
Dewan: is
Alisha: meaning "is."
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) is
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: is
{Pause}
Alisha: And next is...
Dewan: Anna
Alisha: which is the name "Anna."
Dewan: (Slow, by syllable) Anna
Alisha: Now repeat.
Dewan: Anna
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the speaker say "My name is Anna." and then repeat.
Dewan: My naam is Anna.
{Pause}
Alisha: To expand on the pattern, let’s replace "Anna" with "Oscar."
Dewan: Oscar
Alisha: "Oscar"
Dewan: (slow) Oscar (regular) Oscar
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "Oscar."
Dewan: My naam is Oscar.
Alisha: You’ll see that it’s almost the same. Simply replace "Anna" with "Oscar." Now say, "My name is Oscar."
{pause}
Dewan: My naam is Oscar.
Alisha: Let’s try another and replace "Oscar" with "Marie."
Dewan: Marie
Alisha: "Marie"
Dewan: (slow) Marie (regular) Marie
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "Marie."
Dewan: My naam is Marie.
Alisha: Again, it mostly stays the same. Simply replace the name "Oscar" with "Marie." Now say, "My name is Marie."
{pause}
Dewan: My naam is Marie.
Alisha: For more practice, replace "Marie" with "Peter."
Dewan: Peter
Alisha: "Peter"
Dewan: (slow) Peter (regular) Peter
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "Peter."
Dewan: My naam is Peter.
Alisha: Again, all you have to do is replace the name. Now try saying "My name is Peter."
{pause}
Dewan: My naam is Peter.
Alisha: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you're visiting South Africa and someone asks you your name. Your name is Anna. How will you answer?
Dewan: Wat is jou naam? (five seconds) My naam is Anna.
Alisha: Now your name is Peter. Respond to the question.
Dewan: Wat is jou naam? (five seconds) My naam is Peter.
Alisha: Imagine your name is Marie. Answer the speaker's question.
Dewan: Wat is jou naam? (five seconds) My naam is Marie.
Alisha: Imagine your name is Oscar. How will you respond?
Dewan: Wat is jou naam? (five seconds) My naam is Oscar.
Alisha: Now imagine you want to learn that person's name. Ask the question.
(5 seconds)
Dewan: Wat is jou naam?
{pause}
Alisha: Now it's time to answer the question with your own name. Be sure to practice out loud!
Dewan: Wat is jou naam?
{pause}
Alisha: This is the end of Lesson 1.
