Chigusa: If you always wanted to learn a language… |
Peter: …but couldn’t quite stick with it consistently… |
Chigusa: Then, you probably haven’t heard of the 2-minute rule. |
Peter: And in this Sunday News, you’ll learn about the 2-minute rule… |
Chigusa: How it can help you stick with the language… build a strong routine… |
Peter: …and succeed in the long run. |
Chigusa: Welcome to this episode of Innovative Language Learning Sunday News! I'm Chigusa and I'll be your host. My co-host today is the founder of InnovativeLanguage.com, Peter Galante! |
Peter: Hi everyone! Peter here. |
Body |
Chigusa: So, what is the 2-minute rule? |
Peter: So the way the 2-minute rule goes is… if you want to build a new habit, like learning a language, it should only take 2 minutes to do. And this is an idea from the book, Atomic Habits by James Clear. |
Chigusa: Hmm, but why only 2 minutes? I’d think you’d need to put in a LOT more time… If you want to learn a language. |
Peter: In the grand scheme of things, you’re right. But you can’t really put in more time if you’re not used to learning a language in the first place, right? |
Chigusa: That IS true… |
Peter: So the 2-minute rule is all about showing up. If you can put in 2 minutes a day, you’re mastering the skill of showing up… which is the cornerstone of any successful routine. |
Chigusa: And after the 2 minutes are up? |
Peter: After those 2 minutes, you’re done; just walk away. But at some point… you’re going to want to do more. That 2 minutes will turn into 10, 20, and 30 minutes… and that’ll guide you to fluency. |
Chigusa: I see. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. It’s kind of like jogging. First, maybe you’ll start with a walk around the block. And if you stick with that… you’ll eventually want to jog and go a bit further…. And maybe even do a marathon later. |
Peter: Marathon, that's something to build towards. Exactly. But it all starts with that easy, super-simple first step. Just show up and do 2 minutes. So again, this is a great tactic for beginners and anyone that has trouble sticking with learning. |
Chigusa: Got it. By the way, listeners, if you want to put in 2 minutes… with our learning system… Here's what you can do. |
Peter: One: Sign up for the word of the day emails. |
Chigusa: This is a free service that sends you new words every day… improves your vocabulary… |
Peter: …and you can easily spend 2 minutes reading through the word, the examples, listening to the pronunciation, and saying it out loud. |
Chigusa: Two: Learn with our 3-minute lessons. |
Peter: Not quite 2 minutes, but… |
Chigusa: … it comes close, Peter. |
Peter: Exactly, close enough. So our 3-minute lessons are a lesson series for Absolute Beginners where you learn conversational phrases in just 3 minutes… and start speaking the language right away. |
Chigusa: And you’ll find the pathway for these lessons in our lesson library. |
Peter: Three: Learn with our free vocabulary lists. |
Chigusa: Just look for vocabulary lists in the vocabulary dropdown menu on the site. |
Peter: And there, you’ll find 100s of lists for common topics like greetings, talking about weather, everyday life, must-know phrases for conversations, and much more. |
Chigusa: And you can spend 2 minutes picking up new words… or saying them out loud. |
Peter: Four: Listen to the dialogue tracks. |
Chigusa: The dialogue tracks are 10 to 30-second tracks with just the lesson conversation. |
Peter: So, if you want to listen to native conversations or just review a conversation from a previous lesson… you can easily spend 2 minutes listening to one on repeat… |
Chigusa …or several… and train your ear and get accustomed to native speech. |
Peter: Five: Review our PDF Language Cheat Sheets |
Chigusa: We email out freebie cheat sheets every month… so if you’re on our email list, you should be getting them. |
Peter: And just spend 2 minutes reviewing the words and phrases on the cheat sheets. These are a great way to learn a bit of language in just a few minutes a day. |
Chigusa: And if you want our newest cheat sheet, just leave a comment in the comments section, and we'll reply with the link. |
