Lesson Transcript

Hallo almal! Ek is Annemarie. Hi everybody! I’m Annemarie. Welcome to AfrikaansPod101.com’s “Afrikaans in 3 minuten”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Afrikaans.
In the last lesson, we learned the phrase Hoeveel kos dit? which means ”How much is it?”
In this lesson, let’s take a look at how you could answer that question by counting rand in Afrikaans.
In South Africa, the currency is the ZAR, which stands for South African Rand. Please pay attention to the pronunciation in Afrikaans- Rand.
We say rand for general conversations. The term ZAR is very rarely used.
The lowest currency value that exists is “one cent”, or een sent in Afrikaans. “Sent”.
Let’s try to say prices in Afrikaans. Start by trying to say "26 rand and 50 cents."
Ses-en-twintig rand en vyftig cent.
[slowly] Ses-en-twintig rand en vyftig cent. Do you see what we did here? First we say the number of rand and then the word rand. This is followed by “and” in Afrikaans which is en, and then we say the number of cents and finally the word “cent.”
Now, let’s try some other examples -
"40 rand and 99 cents” is
Veertig rand en nege-en-negentig sent.
[slowly] Veertig rand en negen-en-negentig sent.
Ok, how about "199 rand and 98 cents”? This one is longer.
It’s Honderd en nege-en-egentig rand en agt-en-negentig sent.
[slowly] honderd en negen-en-negentig rand en agt-en-negentig cent.
That takes a lot of effort to say, doesn’t it! Well, you can shorten it in two ways. First, you don’t need to say en to combine the rand and the cent. You also don’t have to say the words rand or cent.
Honderd nege-en-negentig agt-en-negentig.
literally means “hundred ninety-nine, ninety-eight”
Just remember that the number of rand comes first, and then the number of sent comes after.
Now it’s time for Annemarie’s Tips.
You will most likely hear the last short form from shop clerks. It’s easier and quicker to use. Also, it’s important to know that the smallest physical coin in the South Africa is 5 cents, vyf sent. However, 1 cent does exist in prices. ...so when paying with cash you round up or down to the closest vyf sent.
You should ask your friends in South Africa to go shopping with you so you can practice these phrases! But first you’ll have to check if they have other plans or not - and you’ll learn exactly how to do that in the next “Afrikaans in 3 minuten” lesson. Lekker dag!
