Hallo almal! Ek is Annemarie. Hi everybody! I’m Annemarie.
Welcome to AfrikaansPod101.com’s Afrikaans in 3 minuten, the fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Afrikaans.
In the last lesson, you learned how to use the verb doen, which means "to do" in Afrikaans.
In this lesson, you will learn how to use hou, which is a delightful Afrikaans verb and the third verb in our series dedicated to the most common Afrikaans verbs.
Hou van can mean "to like" in Afrikaans, so in this lesson we’re going to see how to use it correctly. Let’s start!
Imagine you're in a restaurant with your friend and he or she asks you – Hou jy van biltong?
This means "Do you like biltong?"
Biltong is a dried, cured meat snack that is popular in South Africa. With Afrikaans speakers, this would be a common question, as many South Africans love biltong. It’s really good, you should try it!
Now, supposing you’ve had it before and you like it, you can answer Ja, ek hou van biltong
[slowly] Ja, ek hou van biltong.
Let’s break down this answer.
First we have ja, which simply means "yes."
Then we have ek, which is "I" in Afrikaans.
After that we have hou which is the verb “to like.”
Hou is commonly followed by the preposition van, which means “of.”
Finally, we had biltong which means “biltong.”
So all together it’s Ja, ek hou van biltong.
Literally, hou van means “to like.” So you can use this verb to talk about a person as well. If you want to say “I like you” in Afrikaans, you would say Ek hou van jou.
[slowly] Ek hou van jou.
Afrikaans speakers would only use this sentence in a situation where you like someone on a personal level. For instance, you could use it with someone that you might be interested in.
[slowly] Ek hou van jou.
You can also use this verb with other verbs in the infinitive form as well, to express that you like performing an action. Let’s say you like climbing. In Afrikaans, you would say ek hou van bergklim.
[slowly] Ek hou van bergklim.
Here, bergklim means “to climb,” as in “to climb a mountain.” Make sure the verbs after hou are in the infinitive form with the preposition van in front of them.
Now it’s time for Annemarie’s Tips.
In Afrikaans, when you use hou van with an object or an activity, for instance “chocolate” - sjokolade - or “swimming” - swem, the expression is not very strong. Ek hou van sjokolade, or ek hou van swem.
However, when you use hou van with a person, the expression is much stronger. It would mean you like the person very much.
If you want to say you love someone you can say Ek is lief vir jou, which means “I love you.”
[slowly] Ek is lief vir jou.
In this lesson, you learned how to use the verb hou van in different contexts. Next time you’ll learn another very useful verb, kom.
Do you know what this Afrikaans verb means? I’ll be waiting for you with the answer in the next Afrikaans in 3 minuten lesson. Lekker dag!
