INTRODUCTION
Becky: Hi everyone, and welcome back to AfrikaansPod101.com. This is Beginner Season 1 Lesson 14 - Clearing the Air in Afrikaans. Becky here.
Chesney: Hallo! I'm Chesney.
Becky: In this lesson, you'll learn about expressing emotions. The conversation takes place in the garden.
Chesney: It's between Johan and Daleen.
Becky: The speakers are family members. Therefore, they’ll speak informal Afrikaans. Okay, let's listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Daleen: Ek sal haar nou bel.
Becky: Listen to the conversation one time slowly.

Becky: Listen to the conversation with the English translation.
Daleen: I am really angry at Susan!
Johan: Why, she didn't know that you were going to get such a big fright.
Daleen: I know, but I was afraid the whole night that something was going to happen.
Johan: She just made a joke about the accident.
Daleen: I know, but it was not a good idea.
Johan: I know you are upset but talk to Susan.
Daleen: I'll call her now.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Becky: I wonder what Susan’s joke was?
Chesney: I wonder! It certainly made Daleen angry.
Becky: Yes, Daleen was very open with how she was feeling. Is that typical of Afrikaners?
Chesney: Some can be very open with their emotions, like Daleen.
Becky: But not everyone?
Chesney: No, some are very private.
Becky: That’s an interesting mix!
Chesney: Yes. And there are some people that are big pranksters.
Becky: So it’s good to find out who those people are and not take things they say too seriously.

Lesson focus

Becky: In this lesson, you'll learn about expressing emotions.
Becky: Let’s start with the emotion of “fear."
Chesney: “Fear” in Afrikaans is bang. You can also say skrik, which means “fright.”
Becky: Can we hear some example sentences?
Chesney: Ek is bang om in die hysbak vas te sit.
Becky: “I am afraid of being stuck in the elevator.”
Chesney: Ek stres altyd as my kind swem.
Becky: “I am always stressed when my child is swimming.” Another common emotion is “anger."
Chesney: This is seen as a negative emotion. Being angry in public is frowned upon.
Becky: Okay. Let’s hear some examples to learn about the levels of anger.
Chesney: Ek is briesend kwaad vir Johan.
Becky: “I am seething at Johan.”
Chesney: Lara was bloedrooi van woede.
Becky: “Lara was red with fury.”
Chesney: Ek was so kwaad ek kon slange vang.
Becky: “I was so angry I could catch snakes.” You may also need to speak to other people about their emotions. These following phrases will help!
Chesney: Ek verstaan jy is omgekrap…
Becky: “I understand you are upset…”
Chesney: Ek wil graag met jou praat oor…
Becky: “I would like to talk to you about…”
Chesney: Ons wil iets met jou bespreek…
Becky: “We would like to discuss something with you…”
Chesney: Dit is moeilik om te sê…
Becky: “It is difficult to say…”

Outro

Becky: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye!
Chesney: Baai.
