Hi, guys! I’m Christine. Welcome to AfrikaansPod101.com and to today’s lesson! 10 Questions You Should Know. We’ve added some sample answers for you guys, so let's get going!
1. Wat is jou naam? "What's your name?"
My naam is Susan. "My name is Susan."
Very simple self-explanatory, it's the question that you ask first of all when you meet a new person but it's great if you can say that in Afrikaans and then you go get it started in Afrikaans and they'll be like, wow! this person knows Afrikaans! Great one to remember, just insert your own name there, obviously, I would say - My naan is Christine, not Susan.
2. Hoe gaan dit met jou? "How are you?"
Goed dankie, en met jou? "Good, thank you, and you?"
This is also a very self-explanatory question. It tends to always lead conversations, you always go, oh, Hi, how's it going?
Like, Hoe gaan dit met jou? is widely used, sometimes they don't really care how you're doing but it's just like a conversation starter, small talk. It's also not small talk if you want to go further into things so it's the best question to learn because it's either for small talk when you don't really know someone, you just kind of, like, fills the space, or you do know someone and you really want to know how they're doing so, obviously. Hoe gaan dit met jou?
3. Waar kom jy vandaan? "Where are you from?"
Ek kom van die Kaap af. "I am from Cape Town."
So this is the answer that I would give, obviously, because I am from Cape Town. But this is quite nice to know, if you ask people where they come from because then you can pinpoint their accents and their little colloquialism sayings and things, because, obviously, like every other country, in South Africa, we have lots of different accents depending on where you're from and if you're struggling a tiny bit to understand the Afrikaans of the person you're speaking to, you can be like - Waar kom jy vandaan?
And they can tell you, oh, I'm from here, and then you'll be like, oh, that's why I can't really understand when you say this. That way, so it's a good one to know.
4. Wanneer is jou verjaarsdag? "When is your birthday?"
Ek verjaar op 2 April. "It's my birthday on 2nd April."
So this is also obviously so nice to ask someone when their birthday is, and then find out and be remember to like write it down or remember it and then even if you don't know them that well, when that day comes, just send them a little message or give them a flower or something, I don't know. It's always really nice when someone that you don't expect remembers your birthday, because it's like the people who know you, they should know your birthday; but if it's someone that you don't really know that well and they're like, I remember your birthday because I once asked you Wanneer is jou verjaarsdag? You'd be like, Oh! Someone thinks about me! or I don't know, make them feel special. And if you make someone else feel special, it usually makes you feel special too, so it's a good one to remember.
5. Waar bly jy? "Where do you live?"
Ek bly in Bloemfontein. "I stay in Bloemfontein."
So this is obviously not one that you want to go practicing on strangers because they'll be like, uh… I'm not telling you where I live! But it's a good one if you've just made a new friend in Afrikaans and they're having a party tonight or something, and you can be like, oh I'm totally coming! And then head over to their house for a typical south African barbecue. So it's a good one; easy, easy - Waar bly jy? Three little words, very easy.
6. Waar werk jy? "Where do you work?"
Ek werk vir die bank. "I work for the bank."
7. Wat is jou foonnommer? "What's your phone number?"
My nommer is 00 77 88 123. "My number is 00 77 88 123."
If that's your number, lucky you! You've got it right there, the answer is right there! And also, what a nice one to remember! I couldn’t even remember mine without looking at my notes first. Obviously, it's not usually like that, and if you want to answer your, give your answer in Afrikaans fully, you obviously need to learn the numbers. Everyone has different ways of saying their phone numbers. Some people go like “700 42 33 99” or other people go “three zero zero four three two nine” or whatever, however you like to say it, just make sure that you learn the numbers in Afrikaans so that you can just give it to that person asking you, whoever they are.
8. Hou jy van Suid Afrikaanse kos? "Do you like South African food?"
Ek is mal oor Suid Afrikaanse kos. "I am crazy about South African food."
I don't blame you if you are, I totally am!I mean, south African diet consists quite a lot of meat and veg, and actually it's quite a wide variety here in South Africa. So it doesn't take much to be mal oor Afrikaans, of course, because it's got such a great variety like I said. And we like spices and different tastes and flavors and all made on the braai. And yeah, so if you are crazy about South African food, why don't you let us know in the comments and tell us which ones are your favorite?
9. Was jy al in Suid Afrika? "Have you been to South Africa?"
Nee, nog nie. "No, not yet."
If that was your answer, good answer, because it means that you are going but also sad because you haven't been here. But you're learning Afrikaans so hopefully you're planning on coming here, and come and have the time of your life taste some lacquers and say Afrikaans, of course, and do all the things. So if your answer is in the air, make sure you add the nog nie because it means “it's not yet” but you're gonna, you're planning on it.
10. Wanneer is jou vlug? "When is your flight?"
Ek vlieg 9 uur. "My flight is at 9 o'clock."
Exciting! I mean, I don't know where you're flying but flying somewhere is always very excited. And if someone's asking you or if you're asking them Wanneer is jou vlug? in Afrikaans, I'm hoping you're coming to South Africa. Please come here! It's such a nice place and you’ll really enjoy it, and flying's always really exciting. Some of the South African airlines, the domestic airlines, are hilarious, they have the funniest little overhead pronouncing things.
So, Wanneer is jou vlug?
So we've reached the end of today's lesson of 10 questions that you must know with some sample answers.
